ways to reduce obesity,Treatment of obesity with drugs

Obesity treatment through surgery

The treatment of obesity by surgery (or "bariatric" surgery) is intended for adults suffering from obesity called "massive" or "morbid" (BMI greater than or equal to 40) or "severe" (BMI greater or equal to 35), combined with an illness.

These people must justify several unsuccessful attempts to lose weight and must not have medical contraindications and have psychological support.

There are two types of surgeries:

  • restrictive surgeries that reduce the size of the stomach (gastric band, sleeve gastrectomy, calibrated vertical gastroplasty);
  • restrictive and “malabsorbative” surgeries which reduce the size of the stomach and reduce the assimilation of food by the body ("bypass", bilio-pancreatic bypass).

Stomach surgery is not without risks and the patient must have regular post-operative follow-up. Surgery will only be effective if the operated person adopts good eating habits and changes their lifestyle. It is important to do psychological work on yourself in order to learn to live with a new image.

Treatment of obesity with drugs

To date, there are no miracle drug treatments for obesity.

Certain drugs, however, help to lose weight and limit the absorption of dietary fat by the body. They must be subject to a medical prescription, within the framework of very specific indications.

In addition, their intake should be combined with a balanced diet.

Obesity prevention: the right reflexes to take

Obesity prevention is one of the public health priorities. A "National Nutrition Health Plan" has been in place for a few years to prevent obesity.

On a daily basis, it is recommended to adopt certain gestures:

  • to practice a regular sporting activity: 30 minutes of sport per day make it possible to reduce the risks of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. A more sustained sports practice may be necessary in case of proven overweight. For children, the activity time should be at least 1 hour per day;
  • have a diversified and balanced diet;
  • limit consumption of saturated fat;
  • limit consumption of sugars and salt;
  • eat fruits and vegetables daily;
  • increase calcium intake in children;
  • Regularly monitoring the evolution of the weight curve of children and adolescents is a means of prevention against obesity.
  • “Try to limit the time spent in front of screens. In particular, you should know that television is not suitable for children under the age of three, who develop better in interaction with those around them.
